External Flash
Posted on April 4, 2011On Camera Flash vs External Flash
Most of the compact cameras have an on-camera flash that is great for taking photos of people up to 10 feet away. These on-camera flashes are not powerful enough to take high quality interior photographs, an external flash is required to take the highest quality interior photographs. This link points to Digital Slave Flashes for compact digital cameras that should work with most compact digital cameras.
Inexpensive
The inexpensive flashes are very compact and work well but can not be aimed, so the flash always shoots forward. This does not work well on rooms with many windows, shiny surfaces such as kitchens or bathrooms with mirrors. A moderately priced flash allow you to aim or bounce the flash off the ceiling. I like the Zeikos ZE-DS12 Digital Pro Slave Flash I have two of these flashes and use them for exact light placement to really enhance a room’s features |

Moderately Priced
Moderately priced flashes are larger and allow you to aim the flash. You can bounce the flash off the ceiling to light the entire room evenly. It also allows you to shoot in rooms with many windows, shiny surfaces (kitchens) and bathrooms with mirrors. I have a Bower SF829TW that fits in a camera case that clips to my belt. |

Professional
Professional quality flashes are usually made for specific cameras. They are well worth the price and have may features that require some effort to use correctly.
